We are thrilled to share that The Theatre Lab has been selected to be a part of Spur Local’s Class of 2025! Spur Local, formerly the Catalogue for Philanthropy, rigorously reviews and admits a class of nonprofit organizations each year for their critical local impact on the Greater Washington region.
The 143 organizations in the Spur Local 2025 class were chosen for their critical local impact by 200+ volunteers who live and work in the region, many of whom know these nonprofits as their neighbors.
Congratulations to our fellow Spur Local organizations — it is an honor to sit alongside other dedicated advocates for community work and collective impact. We also thank all of our supporters who help make our work possible!

Honors alumni: Mary Rodrigues will play Sandra Wilkinson (Florence Colleymoore) in The Arlington Players' The Play That Goes Wrong, February 1-16. Elgin Martin will play The Founding Father in Perisphere Theater's The America Play, until February 15.
Teen alumni: Sophia Manicone made her Broadway debut as Iola Stover in the 2023 Tony Award-winning revival of Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry’s Parade. Sophia has now joined the 2025 National Tour of Parade and will reprise the role of Iola Stover and understudy the role of Mary Phagan, and Ben Cherington will play Officer Ivey and understudy Leo Frank and Hugh Dorsey.
Faculty: Madeleine Regina joins the inaugural cohort of 1st Stage's newly launched program, The Directors’ Residency and Commission. Rachel Lipetz wrote an episode for Feminist Fairytales, a podcast created by Madeleine Regina, available to stream this summer.

The Theatre Lab's Life Stories® Program and the Arts Institute for Creative Advancement to receive Grant awards from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Washington, D.C.—The Theatre Lab is pleased to announce it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award of $20,000 to support The Theatre Lab's Life Stories Program. The Grant also includes $55,000 towards the Arts Institute for Creative Advancement.
In total, the NEA will award 958 Grants for Arts Projects awards totaling more than $27.1 million that were announced as part of its first round of fiscal year 2024 grants.
“The NEA is delighted to announce this grant to The Theatre Lab and Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, which is helping contribute to the strength and well-being of the arts sector and local community,” said former National Endowment for the Arts Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “We are pleased to be able to support this community and help create an environment where all people have the opportunity to live artful lives.”
In January, the Arts Institute for Creative Advancement welcomed a new cohort of students for our third year of paid technical theatre training and apprenticeships—an exciting step in building the next generation of theatre professionals. We are deeply grateful to the NEA for their continued support in making this work possible!

ARENA STAGE ANNOUNCES FIRST ANNUAL DC-AREA PERFORMING ARTS CAMP FAIR
***Over a dozen DC-area performing arts summer camps will activate the Mead Center on January 12 for a free fun-filled afternoon where future campers can meet camp representatives and sample summer courses***
(Washington, DC) Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater today announced its first annual DC-Area Performing Arts Camp Fair. Joining forces with a variety of beloved art institutions across the DC Metropolitan Area, the camp fair is tailor-made to provide families of elementary, middle, and high school students with a central location to discover the region’s performing arts summer camps. On Sunday, January 12, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., over a dozen camps will activate the Mead Center with information, family-friendly activities, and sample classes that offer sneak peeks into what creativity and fun kids can expect in Summer 2025. Admission to the DC-Area Performing Arts Camp Fair is FREE. For more information or to RSVP, visit arenastage.org/artscampfair.
“Camp Arena Stage was built on the intention of providing a space that inspires creativity and individuality amongst youth,” said Arena Stage Artistic Director Hana S. Sharif. “Alongside our institutional neighbors, we look forward to welcoming families into the Mead Center to explore the assortment of activities and camp experiences DC has to offer.”
Participating organizations include 7DrumCity Youth Rock Camp, Camp Arena Stage, Camp Levine, Camp Shakespeare, Creative Cauldron’s Arts Adventure Camps, Encore Stage & Studio, Educational Theatre Company, Girls Rock! DC Summer Camp, Joy of Motion Dance Center Summer Camp, Olney Theatre Center, Summer Steps with Step Afrika!, Synetic Theater, Theater J, and Theatre Lab’s Summer Acting Camp for Kids. “I am excited to welcome arts organizations from all over the DMV to Arena Stage for our first-ever DC-Area Performing Arts Camp Fair,” said Arena Stage Director of Community Engagement Sean-Maurice Lynch. “This event is about more than showcasing programs—it’s about opening our doors to families of all kinds and helping them discover the incredible arts opportunities available for their kids. Together, we’re building a community where every child can have what we call at Camp Arena Stage ‘The Best Summer Ever.’”
The perfect opportunity for families to get a head start on planning for Summer 2025, the DC-Area Performing Arts Camp Fair will allow future campers to connect directly with multiple camp representatives in a single location. In addition to an abundance of information, attendees will be greeted with arts & craft stations, face painting, raffles, and more, including the opportunity to experience the excitement of actual camp courses.
“Camp Arena Stage gave me my start as a teaching artist in 2007, launching a career in theater education that brought me so much joy and purpose,” continued Lynch. “I’ve seen firsthand how transformative an arts camp environment can be for young people, sparking creativity and building confidence in ways that last a lifetime. Hosting this Performing Arts Camp Fair feels like coming full circle.”
Arena Stage also announced today the much-anticipated Summer 2025 schedule for its signature camp. Where community and art make magic, Camp Arena Stage is a full-day, multi-arts summer camp for 8 to 15-year-olds hosted on the beautiful grounds of Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School. The Summer 2025 season will consist of a 3-Week Session running July 7 – July 25 and a 2-Week Session running July 28 – August 8, 2025. The Theatre Lab and the team behind the Arts Institute for Creative Advancement (AICA)--our workforce development program in technical theatre--are thrilled to announce a partnership with The Kennedy Center's Office of Accessibility/VSA to support training young adults with disabilities to become theatre tech professionals. The Kennedy Center received a 10M five-year grant award from the U.S. Department of Education under the Disability Innovation Fund (DIF) program, $600,000 of which will go to AICA to support our work promoting competitive, integrated employment (CIE) so that young adults with disabilities are paid real wages for real jobs, while creating pathways to some of today’s most in-demand fields.
In its first two years, AICA has a proven track record for helping young adults with and without disabilities attain livable wage employment in the field, with average starting wages of $22-$25/hr. 87% of AICA graduates were working in professional theatres within one month of graduation.

ABOUT THE AICA:
AICA graduates have completed a program offering 700 hours of paid training and apprenticeships. They have earned nationally-recognized certifications and have worked extensively this year at a variety of professional theatres and concert venues as audio and lighting technicians, Assistant Stage Managers, run crew, wardrobe assistants, deck hands and carpenters.
The AICA was launched at the beginning of 2023 to help alleviate the labor shortage in backstage workers as well as to diversify the field by opening up opportunities for young adults who have encountered obstacles to a livable wage career path. The groundbreaking career-readiness program was formed by the founding members of the DC Arts Education Alliance and is led by The Theatre Lab, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, and Life Pieces To Masterpieces.

Sam Landa, a Theatre Lab alum, and his interdisciplinary theatre and circus company, New York Circus Project, transforms Shakespeare's classic Hamlet into a contemporary acrobatic performance.
Sam describes his company and this show in this way: “Both circus and Shakespeare are perceived as aged forms. By matching the heightened sense of risk that circus delivers to a high-stakes narrative like Hamlet, the show exceeds the original intentions of each of the forms, delighting the audience in the process.” Sam, who is both the creator and director for this groundbreaking show, also works as a consultant of acrobatic and aerial elements on Broadway productions.
Growing up in Alexandria, Sam danced at The Washington School of Ballet; studied musical theater at The Theatre Lab; and was introduced to the aerial arts at Capitol City Circus School (formerly, TSNY DC). He attended high school at The National Circus School (Ecole Nationale de Cirque) in Montreal where he studied the aerial arts under world-renowned coaches. He graduated from Columbia University, where he founded the Columbia Circus Collective. It was at Columbia that this show was conceived.
New York Circus Project is a 501(c)(3) organization. In addition to transforming classics for the stage, the company offers free outdoor performances. These performances allow local communities the opportunity to experience live theatre coupled with aerial acrobatics and physical theater. Washington Stage Guild is seeking a part-time enthusiastic social media coordinator local to the greater Washington DC area to support the WSG marketing director.
Job Responsibilities:
-Manage the social media accounts of Washington Stage Guild, which are currently Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and YouTube.
-Assist with the execution of promotional campaigns for shows and events across key marketing channels.
-Create/adapt market material to create THREE (3) posts per week on each platform (excluding YouTube)
-Oversee artist Instagram takeovers and provide resources to help them succeed in show promotion.
-Be available to attend pre-scheduled rehearsals/performances/events and (when scheduled accordingly and adhering to all AEA Media rules) take photo/video footage to be used in marketing/promotional materials.
Qualifications:
- Must be proficient in Canva (or similar graphic design program) and LinkTree
- Creativity, Flexibility, and understanding of current social media trends
- Organizational and Time Management Skills

Spur Local, formerly the Catalogue for Philanthropy, rigorously reviews and admits a class of nonprofit organizations each year for their critical local impact on the Greater Washington region.
The 143 organizations in the Spur Local 2025 class were chosen for their critical local impact by 200+ volunteers who live and work in the region, many of whom know these nonprofits as their neighbors.
