Our fun and fast-paced introduction to what acting is all about. For anyone who’s ever wanted to give acting a try, or those who haven’t done it since that one time in high school, this class is designed for newcomers of all kinds. Students will be introduced to all the fundamental skills, plus the basics of auditioning and “the business of the business.” Taken together or in succession, this course and Beginning Scene Study constitute essential training in the basics of the actor’s craft.

Classes are intentionally kept small to ensure every person receives extensive personalized feedback from instructors and meaningful collaboration with other students. J.J. Johnson

James J. Johnson (J. J.) is a professional actor and writer. As an actor, he has appeared with many theatres across the DMV, including the historic African-Continuum Theatre Co., Mosaic Theater Co., Arena Stage, Everyman Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Ford's Theatre, Imagination Stage, Theater J, Kennedy Center, and  1st Stage. As a writer, he has received commissions from 1 st Stage and Mosaic Theatre Co. He has also co-written two award-winning short films, “Silent Partner” and “Speak Up Brotha,” produced by Black Man Films LLC. He co-wrote the feature-length version of “Silent Partner” which wrapped in February 2024 in New York City, and features Roderick Lawrence, Susan Heyward, Jeff Perry, and Shoshana Bean. Directed by Eric Branco. He is a proud member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA.
