We’re thrilled to announce a new musical theatre intensive designed for college students and recent grads, older teens with significant musical theatre experience, and alums of The Theatre Lab’s award-winning summer programs. Directed by Theatre Lab Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director Buzz Mauro, this 5-day course culminates in a fully sung reading of Stephen Sondheim’s Company.

This exhilarating course will provide extensive vocal and acting training, and demand considerable work from participants outside the three hours per day spent in class. Participants will be asked to learn their vocal parts through recordings provided by the program director. In class, participants will focus on developing a professional level of song interpretation, vocal production, acting, comedy, and skills specific to staged readings. The performance will be done with book in hand, so no memorization will be required. Blocking and dance will be minimally incorporated as time allows. The goal of the week will be to produce a reading with the entertainment value of a full production.

About the Show: Stephen Sondheim’s Company offers everything that makes Sondheim’s work so enduring: razor-sharp lyrics, emotionally complex roles, and music that demands both vocal mastery and true acting craft. The story follows Bobby’s journey as a single person surrounded by married couples, and explores the tension between independence and connection, between being alone and being alive. Company invites us to examine what we want from love — and what we fear about it.

Company is an actor’s dream. Rich, layered characters. Complex emotional arcs. And above all, one of the most celebrated scores in musical theatre history. From the rapid-fire wit of “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” to the vulnerability of “Being Alive” and the show-stopping electricity of “The Ladies Who Lunch,” the score is a thrilling challenge for singers and actors alike — and a chance to grow vocally and dramatically.
