Session Details

A New Brain is a lesser-known masterpiece by the creator of Falsettos and The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee. This beautiful comedy centers queer characters while making room for a wide range of people (and one frog), takes on life-or-death issues—the main character is dealing with brain cancer—and offers great opportunities for eleven actor/singers of all types who are up for a challenge. The gorgeous music includes classics like “Heart and Music,” “I’d Rather Be Sailing,” and “I Feel So Much Spring.”

The format of the course, culminating in a high-quality staged reading at the end of a single week, requires focus and a lot of homework, but if last year’s reading of Sondheim’s Company is any guide, the payoff will be a performance that’s incredibly rewarding for performers and audience alike.

Schedule
July 27 – July 31, 2026
M-F, 3:00 PM – 6:30 PM
Final public performance at 7:30 PM on July 31

Training Curriculum

In class, participants will focus on developing a professional level of song interpretation, vocal production, acting, comedy, and skills specific to staged readings. The performance will be done with book in hand, so no memorization will be required. Blocking and dance will be minimally incorporated as time allows.

This exhilarating course will provide extensive vocal and acting training, and demand considerable work from participants outside the three hours per day spent in class. Participants will be asked to learn their vocal parts through recordings provided by the program director.

The AMTI is for people who are ready for an intensive experience in adult musical theatre training. Because of the short rehearsal process and challenging material, participants will be expected to put in the necessary time to learn their music outside of program hours, including considerable preparation before the program begins.

Admissions Process

Admission will be by application and video audition only. Application forms are released at the time enrollment opens.
