James Whelan (he/his) is a professional actor who has appeared on many Washington-area stages including The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Round House Theatre, Signature Theatre, Everyman Theatre, Arena Stage, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, The Kennedy Center, Theater J, Olney Theatre Center, Theatre Alliance, and Rep Stage. Regionally he has appeared at Berkeley Rep, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and Primary Stages. He has also performed with The Washington National Opera.

He has studied at HB Studios, and Esper Studios in New York. He also attended Prince George’s Community College before earning his BA at The University of Maryland and his MFA at The Catholic University of America. His TV work can be seen on Law and Order, House of Cards, and VEEP, and his favorite film appearances are on Money Matters, Mistaken, and A Beautiful Mind. He is excited to join the exceptional team at Theatre Lab, and looking forward to being back in an acting studio and having the chance to give students of the craft the very same gift he has been given by so many teachers and mentors over the years!
