Over 30 Years of Transforming Lives Through Theatre Education
For over three decades we have advanced social justice through the arts: teaching 4,500 vulnerable people to create original dramatic works from their lived experiences, making theatre camp possible for over 2,400 children living in low-income households, introducing a paid workforce development program in technical theatre for young adults hit hardest by the pandemic, and nurturing the creativity of tens of thousands of students. Because of supporters like you, we are Washington’s largest theatre school–and so much more!
Please join us in honoring the founders of GALA Hispanic Theatre – Rebecca Medrano and her husband, the late Hugo Medrano. For more than 45 years, GALA has been promoting and sharing the Latino arts and cultures with a diverse audience, creating work that speaks to communities today, and preserving the rich Hispanic heritage for generations that follow. Rebecca and Hugo’s accomplishments include revitalizing the Columbia Heights neighborhood by restoring the historic Tivoli Theatre in 2005 as a home for GALA, creating Paso Nuevo, a thriving free after school drama training and performance program for teens, being named 2010 Washingtonians of the Year, and garnering more Helen Hayes Awards than any other theatre in 2023 for their Spanish language production of On Your Feet: The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan! Hugo passed on May 22, 2023 at age 80. He was the longest-serving Producing Artistic Director in the Washington, DC area. Rebecca continues to serve as the beloved Executive Director at GALA. We look forward to celebrating their legacy.
