Overview

A workshop in all aspects of musical theatre performance, with a special focus on the great works of mid–20th century Broadway: Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rodgers & Hart, Lerner & Loewe, Frank Loesser, Meredith Willson, …. Special attention to exploring the contemporary relevance of works that are too often dismissed as “old–fashioned.” A class for anyone who loves the classic musicals and wants to get better at performing them.

Classes are intentionally kept small to ensure every person receives extensive personalized feedback from instructors and meaningful collaboration with other students. Prerequisites or Prior Experience

No formal prerequisites are necessary. Students who take this class typically have some background experience in musical theatre, acting, and/or have taken one of the following classes at The Theatre Lab: 

  • Intro to Acting*
  • Beginning Scene Study*
  • Getting Started in Musical Theatre

* Note: For new students with no prior acting experience, we recommend starting with Intro to Acting, and then taking Beginning Scene Study, for our essential training in the basics of acting.

Bobby Smith

Bobby Smith has appeared on Broadway in Crazy for You, The World Goes ‘Round, and Forever Plaid. His off-Broadway credits include Forever Plaid, Of Thee I Sing, Snapshots. He also raveled in the first national tours of Brigadoon and The World Goes ‘Round. He has performed at Signature Theatre in 30 shows: Ragtime, Grand Hotel, Passion, A Little Night Music, Titanic, Simply Sondheim, Company, Assassins, She Loves Me, Midwestern Gothic, Road Show, La Cage aux Folles and last season's No Place to Go. He was last seen at Studio Theatre in Fun Home, (2024 Helen Hayes Award for Best Leading Actor), A Class Act, The Long Christmas Ride Home, Reefer Madness, Jerry Springer the Opera, Grey Gardens, and Caroline or Change. He is the recipient of 4 Helen Hayes Awards and 20 nominations, as well as the 2019 Anderson/Hopkins Award, which recognizes artists and actors in the DC community whose creative lives demonstrate great accomplishment to date and promise for the future.  He teaches at Catholic University of America and The Kennedy Center, where each year he serves as mentor and coach for the American College Theatre Festival.
