J.J. Johnson
An intensive introduction to scripted work through preparation and performance of scenes and monologues. This course emphasizes learning effective rehearsal techniques and expanding the actor’s range. Requires approximately 3–5 hours of rehearsal with an assigned partner outside of class each week. Taken together or in succession, this course and Intro to Acting constitute essential training in the basics of the actor’s craft.

Classes are intentionally kept small to ensure every person receives extensive personalized feedback from instructors and meaningful collaboration with other students. No formal prerequisites are necessary. For students with no prior acting experience, we recommend taking Intro to Acting prior to taking this class.

J.J. Johnson
James J. Johnson, or J. J., is a DC-based actor/writer who recently appeared in the film 51st State produced by Arena Stage. Other local credits include: The Royale, Hero’s Welcome (1st Stage); Les Deux Noirs (Mosaic Theatre Company); Ruined (Arena Stage); Our Suburb (Theater J); The Member of the Wedding (Ford’s Theatre); The Unmentionables (Woolly Mammoth Theatre); Kingdom, Wedding Dance, Buffalo Hair (African Continuum Theatre Co.); Anna Lucasta (Rep Stage); Jungle Book (Adventure Theatre MTC); Zomo the Rabbit (2009), P. Nokio, (Imagination Stage); Homer P. Figg (Kennedy Center). FILM: Too Saved, Nocturnal Agony, The New N-Word and The Henchman’s War. J. J. is a founding member of Galvanize DC, a support network for Black DMV theatre artists, and is one of several newly-announced recipients of a Solo Work Commission from 1st Stage.
