The Theatre Lab Youth Scholarship Funds

Your donation to The Theatre Lab Scholarship Funds ensures that children and teen program participants have the opportunity to hone their craft and follow their passions.

Send A Kid To Camp!

Every year The Theatre Lab is flooded with financial aid requests for our summer programs. Many DC area families are facing financial hardships and need help providing their children with an inspiring and educational summer. To ensure we can continue to support our community and give generous scholarships, every dollar you donate to Send a Kid to Camp goes directly to a child.

The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts provides disadvantaged children and teens with the opportunity to have an unforgettable summer artistic experience in our award-winning acting camps and musical theatre institutes.

Scholarship Funds For Teens

Teen Performance Institute of Levine Music and The Theatre Lab Scholarship Fund

Levine Music Theatre and The Theatre Lab’s Performance Institute is a trimester-based advanced musical theatre training and performance program. Each session will consist of 7-weeks of classes in acting, dance, voice, and mechanics of music followed by a 4-week rehearsal and production process. Teen students may enroll for the whole year as company members, or pick and choose sessions that are most convenient for their schedule and location. This fund provides financial aid to students in this training program.

The Dena Kohn Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Dena Kohn Fund, established by the Kohn family and members of the company of The Theatre Lab’s production of Ragtime in memory of student Dena Sara Kohn, provides scholarships each summer to deserving teenagers to participate in The Theatre Lab’s Musical Theatre Institute for Teens. Dena was unconditionally devoted to community service, and her community was the world in which we all live. The Dena Kohn Memorial Scholarship is an opportunity to support local teens in need who, like Dena, demonstrate commitment to the arts and involvement in making the world a better place. Each fall, a mini-golf day is held in Laurel, MD, to raise money for the fund. Contact us for more information if you’d like to take part.

The George Grant Memorial Scholarship Fund

The George Grant Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by alumni from Lawrence University, provides one full scholarship for a teenager to attend The Theatre Lab’s Summer Acting Institute for Teens, where George Grant was a devoted teaching artist. The scholarship is awarded annually to a teen that demonstrates financial need, community service, and a passion for creativity.

The Arts Fund for Child Health and Development

In addition to our Send a Kid to Camp Campaign, you can support a child to attend our summer programs through the Arts Fund for Child Health and Development. This privately sponsored fund helps to provide support for students with financial need to attend The Theatre Lab’s Summer Acting Camp for Kids. The fund’s mission is to create a positive impact on the social, emotional, and intellectual development of underserved children through involvement in the arts.

The Jane Pesci-Townsend Fund for Excellence in Musical Theatre Education

The purpose of this fund is to ensure the continued tradition of excellence in musical theatre education provided by The Theatre Lab’s Musical Theatre Institute for Teens, a program inaugurated by legendary performer and teacher Jane Pesci-Townsend in 2001. The fund will support a faculty of exemplary theatre professionals, acquisition of performing rights to socially relevant musicals offering special challenges and rewards for young artists, and the Musical Theatre Institute for Teens’ well-documented tradition of promoting diversity and ensuring accessibility to quality arts training through need-based scholarships.

Adult Scholarships

The Theatre Lab offers financial aid to ensure that the benefits of high-quality theatre education are accessible to all. Adults who cannot afford tuition for our classes can apply for need-based assistance, as well as work-study. This program has helped participants in our Life Stories outreach programs to make the transition to our acting training courses, and has opened doors to the world of the theatre for many students who never would have discovered their talents without a little help. Generous donations from our supporters have made adult scholarships a primary means of integrating The Theatre Lab into our community.
