Session I and VI (1 week):  Improv

Fun, fast-paced, one-week improvisational workshops designed to increase students’ ability to create spontaneously, connect with one another other on stage, use their bodies and voices more expressively, develop unique characters, and have fun with the art of making theatre. Note: these sessions culminate in skills demonstrations for friends and family rather than scripted performances.

Sessions II/III:  Musical Theatre Camp for Tweens

A fun-filled Musical Theatre Camp open to first-time performers as well as experienced singers and actors. The camp will culminate in a full production of Peter Pan JR. to be performed twice on a professional theatre stage (The Undercroft Theatre, home of the Washington Stage Guild)—once for our younger campers and once in a special evening performance for friends, family and the general public.

Peter Pan, the beloved musical featuring the high-flying music of Broadway greats Jule Styne, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, is the ultimate coming of age story.  Based on the J.M. Barrie masterpiece, Peter Pan is an epic adventure story with an abundance of wonderful roles for actors and singers of all types and at all levels of experience. This version has been adapted by Music Theatre International specifically for emerging artists. As with all Theatre Lab camps, there will be training in improv, scene study and movement along with Peter Pan JR. rehearsals and performance.

This is a program requiring a high-level of commitment from the participants; attendance is mandatory. Unexcused absences may result in casting reassignments.

Sessions IV/V:  Devised Theatre Performance

Back by popular demand, The Theatre Lab will offer a non-musical theatre performance experience that’s as intensive as our renowned tween musical camp!  Led by devised theatre specialist Kirsten Grorud, this program will give participants the tools to create and perform an original work based on their own lives. Through the use of structured improvisation, exercises in storytelling, character development, and playwriting, students will create a script that they will premiere with a full production on a professional stage. Their show will receive two performances—one for our younger campers and one in a special evening performance for friends, family and the general public.

This is a program requiring a high-level of commitment from the participants; attendance is mandatory. Unexcused absences may result in casting reassignments.

"My son loved the camp. The acting, singing and dancing that was taught to my son exceeded my expectation and my son gave the camp five stars.  The most valuable aspect of the camp was that it instilled the belief that hard work leads to success.  It was hard for me to believe that the students put on such a wonderful production of Mulan in just four short weeks.”

“Every evening after class she was bubbly with enthusiasm about what she had learned that day. A challenge she had at school was being comfortable presenting in front of her class, teachers, and parents. To see her on stage today, you would have never known how much she struggled with speaking in front of a group. Thank you for helping her build her confidence!" –Parent of a Summer Acting Camp Student

“The thing I liked best about the camp was that the teachers have the guts to really make kids feel good about what they do.”
—Participant, Summer Acting Camp for Tweens

“My daughter had a wonderful time.  She really liked the camp, kids and instructors.  She was so nervous because she didn’t know anyone, but she made great friends and still keeps in touch with them.  Everyone was so nice and so professional and the best aspect was that she became more independent and more confident.”

The Theatre Lab is dedicated to providing affordable, accessible training for any student seriously interested in learning about the acting process. We do not, therefore, require an audition for admission to the Summer Acting Camp for Kids. Enrollment is limited, however, and students will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Sessions fill quickly, so enroll early to ensure admission.
