Homeless Women

The Theatre Lab has been partnering since 2007 with N Street Village—a community of empowerment and recovery for homeless and low-income women in Washington, D.C.—to serve more than 30 homeless women in substance abuse recovery each year through Life Stories®. Using a combination of improvisation and screenwriting techniques, Life Stories participants have created powerful film works on themes including failure, forgiveness, perseverance and redemption.

In 2012, our N Street Village artists worked with guest playwright Jennifer Nelson to develop and perform an original play, “My Soul Look Back in Wonder: Life Stories from Women in Recovery,” at The Kennedy Center. The sold-out performance in the Terrace Theatre was followed by a panel discussion featuring the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. The production was hailed by The Washington Post as “the most moving performance at The Kennedy Center this year” and is the subject of a major documentary, How I Got Over, by director Nicole Boxer.

“I had a lot of years in great darkness. This brought the light out in me.”
